Vegan Market and Kirsten's Kick Ass Icecream with Russell and Heather

Russell and Heather and I went to a vegan market to enjoy a lovely green juice. It was an interesting place, perfect for lots of people watching.  Steven also happened to be there, so it was a good opportunity to bid him farewell.  After the market, we went to Costantia Uitsig, close by, for a final Kirsten's Kick Ass Icecream.

Tapi Tapi ice cream with Russell, Carmen, the Pater and Kobus

I haven't been in Observatory for so long.  It certainly has lots of atmosphere.  We all met up there to enjoy some lunch and try the very unusual Tapi Tapi ice cream that specialises in African flavours. I tried the Impepho Tea, Mhiripiri and Mystery Flavour. It was unusual but delicious.

The wonderful creator of the ice cream

He is a molecular scientist by trade, a perfect background for experimental ice cream!

Ode to things I love: Ice cream

What I love most about ice cream

  • The sweetness
  • The smooth, creamy consistency
  • The refreshing coolness
  • The crunchy bits (especially the nuts and chocolate bits)
  • The huge variety of forms and flavours (endless choice!)

Most exotic and delicious ice cream ever

  • Pistachio ice cream in Damascus market (Syria).  It was crammed with delicious pistachio, mouthwateringly creamy and cost less than a dollar.

Favourite childhood memories of ice cream (where my love affair began!)

  • Marco Polo ice cream (especially litchi flavour) in SeaPoint, Cape Town - often combined with a ride on the choo-choo train
  • Grandpa Station treating me to a soft serve cream on one of our Muizenberg walks
  • Mixing up milk and vanilla ice cream at home as a kid
  • Caramel-crisp ice creams (with David Livingston after school)
  • Soft-serve with a flake and nuts (I still love this)
  • Granadilla lollies at the beach
  • Chocnut Sundae at The Spur, Cape Town, with the family
  • Cassata ice cream at The Cassanova (one of Gramp's favourites, too)
  • Vanilla ice cream at home with chocolate sprinkles
  • Ice cream at home with chocolate sauce that hardened on impact

Illawarra Walk: Thirroul to Wollongong

We did a 15 km hike from Thirroul to Wollongong along the coast. It was a bit too built up for me to rate it as a favourite, but the company was wonderful, although we missed Gavin who was sick with flu.  Srini, as always, set up some great photo opportunities and is becoming quite the consummate leaper and leaping photographer.

Some highlights:
  • A lovely swim about half way to give us new energy. Plus a nice coffee.
  • The colour of the ocean - a beautiful emerald green in places.
  • Perfect weather - lots of sunshine with a bit of wind to ensure we didn't get to hot.
  • Losing our leader and venturing forth on our own.  Great that Srini knew Wollongong having lived here when he first arrived in Sydney.
  • Meeting the lovely Janice who joined our little group.
  • The great lighthouse in Wollongong with secret access to a gorgeous sea pool where we had another swim.
  • A great ice-cream in Wollongong to celebrate the end of the hike.

The cottage in Thirroul where D.H Lawrence stayed towards the end of his life.

The Spring flowers were still out.

Views along the way

A refreshing swim and some fun.

The Wollongong Lighthouse in the distance.

Lots of people having picnics and making the most of the weather.

This gull was attracted by a lady's ice-cream!

The beautiful sea pool below the lighthouse

Some final leaps for the day.

Srini, who, unlike me, is unphased by heights

Time for an ice-cream before we caught the train.

I liked this wall painting on a building in Wolongong.  Not sure if it's an advertisement or just a bit of fun.
